Narrator Wilbr and his traveling companions Algae, Kemp, Burbank, Condella, et al, are a band of thespians who travel from planet to planet and perform plays - sort of an interstellar USO. It’s set in a far future where humans are relegated to the status of serfs and slaves working for superior aliens like the Archons and Dragomen. The same could be said of Simmons’ new short novel, “Muse of Fire,” a side-trip back to his old sci-fi stomping grounds. Bryant was also quick to point out that the book was head and shoulders above the usual suspects on any given bestseller list. In a 1992 review for “Locus” magazine, Ed Bryant - another Denver writer - summed up his review of “Children of the Night” by pointing out that the novel read like it was cobbled up by a man who no longer believed in his subject matter - in that case, horror.
